A bit off-center from your actual point, but I think you hit the nail on the head with Gwen wanting to be liked; that's honestly her biggest flaw, I think, because her desire to be liked in a way alienates her or comes close to alienating her. She sleeps with Ianto because he's the first one she forms a real connection with (besides Jack), cheating on Rhys in the process, she's honestly dismissive of Tosh in the first season (when in a lot of ways I think they could've been close)... she's very closed off trying to relate. It's weird.
