So I've heard people criticize Frozen for the fact that Anna's "I want" song is about wanting romance. I recall someone pointing out that it had been a very long time since a female character in a Disney movie sang about wanting romance, implying this was going backwards.

It's taken me awhile to get my thoughts together but here is why I, as an asexual woman, am a very big fan of Anna singing about how she wants romance:

I grew up during the Disney renaissance, in the early 90s. I was a big fan of many of those movies and still am. But the main characters didn't sing about wanting romance, because duh. Of course they wanted romance. Other desires were worth singing about, but romance was taken for granted.

Frozen has Anna singing about romance and Elsa not having any romances, which makes it clear that romance is a choice. It's perfectly OK for Anna to want romance - but it's not something everyone needs to want.

One of the many interesting articles I have found in my wanderings on the internet is this piece comparing Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid to Anna from Frozen. I think it's interesting, but ultimately very flawed.
