Yep, which I think is very telling. He could have broken into Sam's home and tried to convince Sam to rejoin him any time, but he waits until John isn't around.
Supporting John is a no-brainer to Dean, whereas Sam understands that he was abusive towards them. (Perhaps more to Sam?)
I wouldn't say more so to Sam, although there was a lot more surface conflict with Sam. But I think John was fairly shitty to both his sons, in different ways. Dean later in the show does come to understand that John mistreated him, but that doesn't really start until after John dies.
