I never actually saw the Sarah Jane Adventures, don't really know why. I remember being irritated when fans complained that a children's show like the Sarah Jane Adventures was better than an adult show like Torchwood. Not only did it make me defensive of my show (even though…I have to admit the first two seasons of Torchwood were not high quality television), the concept that of course an adult show should be better than a kids' show irritated me. Plenty of media geared towards children is high quality, and a lot of what adults choose to consume is crap. Age has nothing to do with it.
I do <3 that alien rock in Day in the Death.
(BTW, actually the pilot of SJA does have Sarah Jane communicate with a being of Mary's species, and it's played like a moment of joy and mutual help.)

I hadn't thought of the Willlow and Xander/Cordelia comparison. Of course, Tosh and Owen were not nearly as close as Xander and Willow, but I can certainly see how Tosh would feel hurt that she had been there for a while, and been interested in Owen for a while, and Gwen had just arrived and was in a relationship with Rhys that she valued. But Gwen is the one Owen sleeps with.
I think of the four Tosh is the one Jack was the least close to, but it is still a deep and important relationship for both of them.
