Challenge #05: In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

01. Icons Of: Huo Wensi and/or Huo Wensi/Luo Fei from the cdrama Detective L.

02. Recommendations of programs to create fanwork. This is quite a specific one because I've been itching for years to create something, from icons and graphics to fanvids because I have ideas. I used to have a program ages ago (Microsoft's Picture It!) which I created various things including graphics for the fanmixes I did way back when, but that was on an old computer and that program has long since been discontinued and defunct. I've been attempting to look for comparable programs, however my findings lead me to being confused and overwhelmed and a bit apprehensive on the legitimacy since some places are websites only instead of a program you download onto your computer, and even then I don't want to download anything that is going to take forever to load or cause problems, which I know is a risk for anything these days anyway.

So, my request is mainly for the graphic makers and vidders in fandom: what programs do you use, your pros and cons for them, how much of a learning curve there is and if there is good tutorial out there. Note that I mainly use my laptop, I don't do anything on mobile.

So, almost one year ago we focused on Challenge #209 - More Than One Movie. Now I thought we could focus on First Movies for the next Challenge. :D

You may icon all movies where the first movie is your favorite. :o) Feel free to choose the same fandoms you went with for Challenge 209. :D As long as you love the first movie it's okay to go with those too. :D

For this Challenge you can't use whole franchises like "Marvel Cinematic Universe" or "The DC Extended Universe". It has to be special movies about certain characters to count for this Challenge. As example above I added "Wonder Woman" because from both "Wonder Woman"-movies the first movie is my favorite. Since the "Wonder Woman"-movies all focused on one character ("Wonder Woman") in this case you may go with those movies although they belong to a whole franchise. Please ask questions if you're unsure and I'll let you know if those movies are okay to use. :o)

Vid recs

Festivids went online. I can't create vids myself, but I love watching them. Here are some which especially caught my eye this year:

Babylon 5 : I loved all three of this year's B5 vids, but Marching On really is a love letter to the entire show, and I adore it.

Conclave : The Devil you know : in which there is scheming, rise and fall, and gorgeous cinematography. Captures the spirit (and performances) of the movie really well.

Elementary: Read my mind: my favourite incarnations of Holmes and Watson get a superb outing in this one.

Foundation: So it goes: captures the grandeur, the insanity, the messed up parent/mentor/child (protegé) relationships really really well. (No material from the third season used as far as I can tell, if anyone hasn't watched it yet and doesn't want to be spoiled.)

Knives Out Movies: Now you know: Sondheim/Knives Out OTP! Witty and moving take on all three leads, their stories and the connecting elements.

Star Trek: Prodigy: Find your people: which is what our young heroes do so very well in this lovely show - and in this vid.

Road Trip Day

M, Boycritter, and I went down to the nearest Hobbytown (about an hour away) for Bandai Builders Day yesterday. This Hobbytown just became the only Bandai Builders certified shop in the state, so I definitely wanted to support them and their events. (Hobbytowns are franchise shops and each individual one is locally owned.)

This event had a free 30 Minute Fantasy kit, unique to this event! We got there a smidge early, did our check-in (and skewed their demographics, ha!), and got our kits. It was a pretty simplified kit, so I think it only took about 15-20 minutes to build. We chatted with other folks who turned up and posed for some photos while working, lol. By the time we were done, other people were arriving and waiting for our seats. Yay for a good turnout! By the time we'd finished shopping, maybe 2/3 of their stock of the event kit was gone.

(I picked up a 30MF accessory set, HG Abyss, HG 0 Gundam ACD, and HG Murasame Kai as well. M got a ton of paint for his tanks - though he did like the event kit and might pick up some 30MF stuff. Boycritter got a RG RX-78-2 Gramps and HG Sazabi.)

From there we went up to the conveyor sushi place and ate ourselves broke. So tasty! I tried to be a little more adventurous and found a few things I really liked. Next time I want to try more. ^_^

Details aren't entirely available yet, but there's some sort of 30 Minute Label competition in March and I'm interested, but that's also not a lot of time to come up with something, get a kit, and build. So I guess we'll see. But then again, I'd really like to enter for the fun of entering. Hmm.

Wonder Man (TV Miniseries)

Jan. 31st, 2026 05:13 pm
selenak: (Gentlemen of the Theatre by Kathyh)
[personal profile] selenak
Aka a new Marvel miniseries which like, say, Moon Knight, does its own thing and tells its own story though it does take place within the MCU. By which I mean that if you've never watched a single Marvel movie, you'll still have no problems following the plot and character arcs. (Though if you do have watched Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi, you already know the backstory of one of the two main characters, which otherwise you quickly learn within the first episode.) There is also minimum super power content, though the fact they exists is plot relevant in the way that, hm, Willy Loman's profession is to Death of a Salesman. Genre-wise, I'd qualify this as a dramedy, and much like Agatha all Along references various Horror shows and movies and Wanda Vision various tv comedy shows in its structure while offering their own story, Wonder Man is a take on both Hollywood on Hollywood films, and "out of luck odd couples trying to make it within a system set against them" stories, with the one referenced the most being Midnight Cowboy (1969 movie starring Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman, if you haven't watched it yet, which you should). (There is also a John Steinbeck flair to the tale, from both Grapes of Wrath and Mice and Men. )

The premise and story: Our hero Simon (played by the same actor who gave a great performance as Angela's husband in Watchmen the tv series, to describe his character there as unspoilery as possible) is an actor going through the gruelling audition after audtion for bit parts routine which most actors other than the very few stars out there have to live with; against him isn't just the fact he's prone to overthink everything and unable to read the room, though he does have talent and being an actor is his dream, but the fact he secretly has superpowers, and due to a catastrophic accident on a film set a few years earlier, actors with superpowers can't be hired anymore. Just after he managed to get himself fired from playing a victim in the latest American Horror Story installment, he runs into none other than Trevor Slattery (played by Ben Kingsley, enjoying himself in the role even more than he did in Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi), recently landed in LA and trying to return to show biz. Trevor turns out to be the Ratso to Simon's Joe, the George to his Lennie, and we follow these two through auditions, improvs, filming...and their past catching up with them, because Simon isn't the only one who has a secret.

The moment when I knew I'd love the show was the scene early on when Simon and Trevor are quoting/acting favourite scenes at each other, and Trevor goes into one of Salieri's monologues from Amadeus. Note that Ben Kingsley doesn't deliver this by imitating F. Murray Abraham's performance. Or, dare I say, how he'd play it, were he cast as Salieri in an Amadeus production. He plays/quotes it the way Trevor would - an actor who in the MCU, we learn, actually did a lot of Ben Kingsley's earlier parts, like playing in East Enders, but never had the big Gandhi breakthrough, let alone the aftermath, did way too much drugs and drinks and then did what he did in Iron Man 3 . The series for all its various hilarious send-ups - that there are movies named "Cash Grab" in it is the least of it - also is great with its depiction of the actorly life. For example, the sequence when Simon, Trevor and some other contestants have to do improvs for the director of their potential breakthrough, if they get hired, has its comedy, but the actors given various situations to play out aren't hamming it up, they really try to embodiy the situation/emotion asked for.

Another enjoyable aspect of the show is that Simon's family are immigrants from Haiti (Simon was born in the US and doesn't speak but understands Creole, while his mother and the older relations often drop in and out of it) - and there isn't a single cliché involved. No voodoo. No suddenly revealed warlord past. They're simply an immigrant family.

Speaking of immigrants: like several other more recent MCU properties, this one features the "Department of Damage Control" going after supers, and here the subtext is not so sub without overhwelming the story. I mean, it's impossible not to think of current day events when you watch what they're doing, and it's important to the plot, but it doesn't overhwelm the story. Whose heart is the developing relationship between Simon and Trevor and, as different as they are from each other, their passion for acting. I did not have this on my yearly wish list, and the show was a very pleasant suruprise for me.

A lovely Winterthing box from [personal profile] tainry! (A couple of days ago, actually-)

Oooh, jewelry! Lemon earrings! I don't think I've ever worn hooks like these and I had to get an old pair to put in to make sure my holes were clear. Got it figured out, though. ^^;; And the set, omg it's gorgeous. I need to spend more time being elegant. (Though when it gets warmer, I think.)

Spatula! I love bamboo spatulas and this one is gorgeous. One day I will climb up and get the whole collection spruced up and take some photos. (They're on top of a china cabinet; I at least need to stand on a chair.)

Bag!! I actually have a bunch of Marvel reusable shopping bags from boycritter but not this one! I use these bags for everything so it will get a lot of use. (I still have some of my very original cloth bags from... almost twenty years ago now?! Quite a few have fallen apart, but some have surprisingly survived. It'd be nice if they'd catch on more here but a lot of people are still surprised and baffled by them.)

And stickers and goodies, omg. These are an absolute joy and I'm going to be pawing through them forever to pick favorites and decide what goes on my new toolbox. (And possibly my old toolbox, when it gets warmer, since that's just in the garage and will be getting use. It still has a bit of real estate here and there.)

Thank you thank you!! <3<3<3

Happy Anniversary, Lemonade Cafe! I certainly did not think, 23 years ago, that I was creating anything enduring. But it is still here, and I am still here. Go figure.

I have, in fact, chosen a notebook to tackle, though it's going to share with writing a bunch of stuff (hopefully) for the [community profile] small_fandoms Drabblethon. It has some blank pages, so I can also write drabbles in it. (Ha!) So far I've been able to tear out and pitch some pages of things already long written and posted, which feels good. Some of what's left includes notes for projects that are downright ancient. And, like, to be honest I can probably just write whatever to finish some of these up? It's been so long that I feel like any actual expectations have vanished.

I am free.
rogueslayer452: (Jessica Jones. Private Investigator.)
[personal profile] rogueslayer452
++ We have the official teaser for the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, which I'll be honest the only thing I care about from this is the return of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones. The interactions between Jessica and Matt in The Defenders was truly the biggest highlight and I've always wanted more of that, and we're finally getting it.

++ I'm still not on the Heated Rivalry train, but I'm happy for all those who are enjoying it. It's just interesting how the show gained so much traction so quickly since it premiered, and really sometimes you just don't know what is really going to resonate with so many people. Perhaps it's the FOMO some have, hopping on trends and popularity of something, whatever it is every single time I see someone talking about it in the wild and not in a fandom space it's just fascinating. I get slightly taken aback because this isn't usually something that most would talk about, the show isn't made for the broader audience in mind (at least to my knowledge, it's a mature queer story with explicit scenes), so it's kind of a pleasant shock. I mean, when the Major of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, recommended the city's citizens read the book for free during the winter storm and the Prime Minister of Canada meets with the cast and pays tribute to the show? That's kinda amazing.

Challenge #15: How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

Pretty good! I’ve been doing Snowflake for about 10 years now, and it’s always a good time, one of the fannish staples I look forward to every year. As always, I enjoyed answering the challenges and the “ritual” of the month of fandom chat/squee. But I did feel less of a sense of community this year (which makes sense, given what else has been going on in the world in January 2026…), which is a little sad, since that’s also an important part of Snowflake for me.

Actually, let me talk about that latter part here, because here’s where it seems to fit best into the flow of this post. Snowflake Challenge 2026 sense of community musings )

I answered all the challenges, like I usually do, and enjoyed the mix of old favorites and new prompts.

Favorite challenges )

Old challenges I was looking forward to seeing again which were not repeated: I missed the Snowflake staples of “create a fanwork”, “try something new”, and “set some goals for yourself”. This is fine, though, because I can just do those anyway, as a challenge to myself – they do not require any creativity to SET as a challenge, and while I enjoy browsing people’s answers for them, the main reason I like them is the action I take in response, so I don’t really require a community for them. I’ve also missed the “rec something” / “rec yourself” type challenges – which I can still do on my own, since they don’t require creativity to set either – but a large part of those is definitely browsing other people’s answers. (I also miss the scavenger hunt, but that one’s not the same sort of staple as the others are, I think. And definitely not something I’m going to do on my own.)

So I’m just going to set myself those challenges anyway. The unasked challenges:

Make a fanwork:

I guess the moodboard and the primer are both fanworks, and I also made a fanwork for [community profile] fandomtrees during this month, so that one is technically fulfilled, but also I use Snowflake as my push to make some icons for new fandoms and/or new images I’ve come across during the previous year. I still plan to do this, but I will wait a little bit because there’s an installment of Taskmaster cartoons coming that I want to potentially include in that icon batch.

Try something new:

I did this naturally, by watching the first 5 episodes of The Goes Wrong Show that [personal profile] rionaleonhart has been writing delightful fic for and posted a primer for. I will post about it in full once I’m done with both series, but it has been a very fun thing to watch and, as I’d hoped and as Riona mentioned, does have a similar vibe to Taskmaster – not that it’s a similar format or anything, but, like, the low-stakes absurdist disaster feeling is similar – which is obviously great!

Rec some fanworks:

I have also done this a little bit in the course of completing the other challenges, like reccing the Taskmaster cartoons when I was talking about r/Taskmaster for community promo and reccing a brand new Elis/John longfic in the E&J fandom primer post. But here are things that did not come up naturally that I was hoping to have a chance to rec: Vorkosigan Saga, Murderbot, original art )

And, you know what, I am going to do some self-recs, too: chemistry anthropomorfic, Machineries of Empire poem, Monday Begins on Saturday )

Set some goals for yourself:

Whew, that's a lot of swords though it doesn't feel like I've done much? Basically the cold is destroying my energy levels. So what I've been doing is going through old notes. I told myself I was 'sorting' them but there has been no actual sorting. Shortly, I'm just going to have to find a box to toss them all in because they're literally taking up the whole sofa. I can't even explain what I'm looking for, aside from one particular list I've mostly found but I just... IDEK how I'd sort them. I should probably give up on organization and just pick things up and work on them, lol. My plans for a drabble six years ago are not terribly important at this point; if the idea or the drabble come back around independently and I do something different that's fine. (It's not like I've never written different things for the same idea anyway. Whatever!)

I did get a tiny bit more done with the Best Moves/NaNo 2003 re-write. At the moment I'm trying to deal with a patch of exposition to make it feel a little more natural. (And then overall figure out how to balance out the plot and subplot and just make everyone feel a little more rounded.)

I've also figured out what to do with friend's cameo character. He can basically be slid entirely out of the narrative and replaced with a character who can impact things a bit more. I feel pretty good about this.

I've never been on TikTok, but now appears to be time to get off. From Tumblr:

Take a look at the latest update to Terms & Conditions...
(Also has instructions for how to delete the app while bypassing the new terms.)

Instead people are switching to something called Upscrolled:

UpScrolled, a Palestinian-Founded App, Emerges as TikTok's Rival
The app gained momentum after TikTok’s US operations were taken over last week by a consortium of US-backed investors and corporations.

Among them is Oracle founder Larry Ellison, a close ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose involvement has raised alarm among users over alleged censorship of pro-Palestinian content.

TikTok’s global operations remain under its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. However, criticism intensified after TikTok permanently banned Emmy Award-winning journalist and Al Jazeera contributor Bisan Owda from Gaza on Wednesday.

How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go? Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Also, feel free to entice engagement by giving us a preview of what your post covers.

Did you get all you wanted to get from it? Are there things you're going to carry with you for as long as you can? Are you going to continue to challenge yourself? Continue to connect? We can't wait to hear.

I enjoyed it! It's always nice to connect with other fans. I didn't do all of the challenges,  but I enjoyed the ones I participated in.

The timing of the posts did throw me off. I understand that everyone's in different time zones; also, life happens. Technology happens. I get it. But I wonder if it might help to post challenges ahead of time, and/or schedule the posts?

I'm not sure how else I might challenge myself per se, but I post frequently and plan on continuing. I try writing something every day, and DW is a great place for that. I would certainly love to continue making connections.

Thank you to all, and I look forward to the friending meme on the 31st!
