Day #08: Favourite friendship
This is a hard one, as there are so many good friendships on the show. For rivalry and angst, I would go for Buffy and Faith (or should that be categorized as a romance? I can never decide). For long-lasting strength, I would go for Buffy, Xander, and Willow. I think my absolute favorite is Willow and Xander. I mean, he saved the world by telling her he loved her. What more can you ask for in a friendship?

I loved Buffy and Willow in early seasons, of course, but as IRL, lovers/partners pulled them from the early intimacy. People complain about that but that is exactly what happens. No one can sustain the same childhood/school age level of friendship into adulthood, at least that I know of.

So my favorite female friendships in the late seasons are ones that I think didn't get explored enough, that didn't get enough screentime: Buffy and Tara (I've written about them before and plan to say more in future), and Buffy and Faith. In both instances I can't help but feel that they didn't get enough time together.

Buffy and Faith is an example of "the subtext nearly became text - before Joss put it back into the box." So I think there's a bit of both, whether the writers say so or not. Faith and Spike occupy almost the exact same role in Buffy's life. But they are also "sister slayers", which complicates things and is interesting in terms of Angel & Spike parallels of "family". Which points to how screwed up the system/paradigm that created both vampires and Slayers is.(Has anyone explicitly made that parallel in fic or meta?)

Sarah and Eliza have a really wonderful chemistry I think even in Dirty Girls you can see them standing very close to one another in a way that contradicts Buffy's proclaimed wariness of Faith (which, you can't blame her - Faith de facto stole/raped her body, or at least violated it.)

Not that I'm aware of, but there's a lot of fic and meta that I miss.
