Toss-up between season three and season seven (I don't usually include S1 when ranking seasons, because it is just a little baby season). S3 was the season where I lost my emotional investment in the show the first time through. It has Faith, which is a good, but while I like Faith a lot, I had a hard time getting into her arc this season. I was bored of the high school setting by this point, too. Season seven has a lot of things that I like (a lot of what they did with Buffy/Spike, Andrew, and Buffy's arc in the season), but a lot of things that weren't very well done. A lot of the scenes seemed stilted, all those potentials I never managed to warm up to, and villains (both Caleb and the First Evil) that didn't really interest me.

Season three would have worked better for me if it had been more consistent with Faith's role in it. The real high points - Bad Girls, Consequences etc - don't happen until very late in the season. (the Mayor and Faith are a wonderful mirror of Buffy and Giles.) Meanwhile the Bangel angst eats up too much frickin' time.

Personally S7 is my least favouriter (the villains, the plotholes, too many Potentials) but I LOVE S3, most especially because of Faith. I don't think her character is inconsistent - and yeah, her role shifts, but she's doing a corruption arc so I don't think that's a problem. Unless I'm missing what you mean...?

I don't know exactly what [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll meant, but for me, I feel like the series suffered from Faith not being a full-time character. Often things seemed to jump around, like I was never entirely clear why she and Buffy went from their estrangement in "Revelations" to being close again in "Bad Girls". Faith's decision to join the mayor also seemed a bit random to me, although this could be me. I like Faith quite a bit, though, and she's definitely one of the best things about the season.
