From 2.10, Hunted:

GORDON: See, I was doing an exorcism down in Louisiana. Teenage girl, seemed routine, some low-level demon. But between all the jabbering and the head-spinning, the damn thing muttered something. About a coming war. And I don't think it meant to, it just kind of slipped out. But it was too late. Piqued my interest. And you can really make a demon talk, you got the right tools.

DEAN: And what happened to the girl it was possessing?

GORDON: She didn't make it.

DEAN: Well, you're a son of a bitch.

Now when did Dean change his mind on that one?

I think it's a "slippery slope" kind of thing. :/

We know he was doing it by the time they were trying to find Lilith in season 3, because of episode 7.15, "Repo Man", where it flashes back to during that time when they were trying to find a way to save Dean's soul from going to Hell. At that point, they actually got the permission of the human that was being possessed to torture his body so that they could get information out of the demon that was possessing him... then they dropped him off at a hospital afterwards.

Over time the boys have both become more hardened to that sort of thing, don't seem to see it the way they used to. :/ It definitely bothers me, too. :(

Yeah - I think it is early S3 where we see them killing demons casually, in Sin City, the crossroads demon, and whatever episode it is that Bobby shoots Ruby for no reason. And from then on they are intermittent about caring about possessed people.
