Sam’s big fear is not that Benny is going to steal Dean away from him, but that Benny is a better person than he is. For once, a monster resisting its monstrous nature is not an inspiration for Sam. It’s a mockery. That maybe Benny treats Dean better than he does, that maybe Benny is worthy of Dean’s trust in a way that he could never be.

I agree. The whole season is a build up of that theme for Sam :'( culminating in that last speech in the church.

Yes - tied into Dean's own issues, and his anger at Sam which is as much about his trauma from Purgatory and life in general as his issues with Sam. And I think Sam sort of knows that, but vacillates between "Dean is being a jerk" and "Dean is right about everything".

I was thinking how yeah Sam should know that Dean would choose Sam over anyone just by the fact that Dean came back to find him and that speech about driving down crazy street. But, Sam is obviously in a bad place. it's all connected to him quitting hunting after Dean left, aye? The "I'm no better than anyone else" idea maybe comes from the fact that he could not stop Dean from "dying". He has serious self-worth issues. But Season 8 is also about Sam trying to convince Dean of Dean's worth - because Dean thinks that if anyone is going to get sacrificed for the cause it should be him.

It's like a self-worth competition between the two *headdesk* Season 8 ends with Dean affirming his love for Sam but that's not enough because Sam thinks he's not worthy period(same goes for Dean), and that's carried on into Season 9. Seriously, I hope Season 11 sees God showing the boys that they are worthy outside of their love for each other because it really has to stop somewhere.
